‘Hecuba, not Hecuba’ by the director of the Avignon Theatre Festival Thiago Rodrigues in Antwerpen

19/01/2025

Thiago Rodrigues, director of the Avionyon Theatre Festival (the number one forum in the Francophone theatre scene worldwide), brings his new play ‘Hécube, pas Hécube’ to Antwerp 17 and 18 January at De Singel.

The production was shown in Avignon in 2024, which is a first – the Comédie-Française in Paris has traditionally ignored the Avignon Fest, and the modern version of Euripides’ tragedy features actors from this very theatre (classical and with the best actors in the country). The play is multi-layered, as the director aptly puts it: ‘I wrote the script between Euripides’ lines’. The actress rehearsing Hecuba faces similar problems to the ones that fate put the heroine of Greek tragedy in the face of. In today’s social, public, political realities.
