Art Antwerpen 2024 – perfect final to the Belgian art season

Art Antwerp 2024, held for the 4th time from December 12 to 15 at Antwerp Expo, attracted a record 15,640 visitors, 15% more than last year. This boutique-style art fair strengthened its reputation thanks to its warm atmosphere, well-curated selection of galleries, and spirit of discovery. Visitors were offered a vibrant mix of solo and duo presentations (27 out of 70 galleries), showcasing both renowned masters and emerging talents. About 10% of the visitors came from abroad, reflecting the growing international popularity of the fair.

The event became a focal point for collectors and museum groups from around the world, including The Cultivist, Young Collectors Circle, and others. Guests praised the professional organization and the discovery of new names in the art scene. Even for established Antwerp galleries, the fair was an opportunity to engage with a new audience and build connections with young collectors. The festive and positive atmosphere created the perfect conclusion to the Belgian art season. Thanks to numerous exhibitions in the off-program at museums and galleries, the city became a hub for cultural events. The fair not only presented high-quality art but also reminded everyone of Antwerp’s rich tradition as a place where avant-garde ideas are born and thrive.

At Art Antwerp 2024, key trends in contemporary art were prominently displayed. The focus was on sustainability and ecology, with several galleries showcasing projects that highlight the importance of human-nature interaction through the use of recycled materials and organic forms.

Moreover, the art fair reflected an interest in digital technologies, with works exploring the boundaries between the physical and virtual worlds. There was also a noticeable emphasis on inclusivity and cultural diversity, with many galleries presenting artists from various social and cultural contexts, creating a platform for new voices and perspectives.

Visitors also highlighted the cozy and festive atmosphere of the fair, which made it feel more like a place for warm conversation and cultural exchange rather than just an exhibition. The international audience praised the high level of organization and the opportunity to discover the dynamic art scene in Belgium. Many expressed a desire to return next year to experience the energy and spirit of discovery at Art Antwerp once again.

Sophie Van de Velde Gallery, one of the leading Antwerp galleries, made a strong statement at Art Antwerp 2024. Known for its thoughtful approach and selection of both established masters and new talents, the gallery presented an exhibition that sparked great interest among collectors and visitors. Its booth became one of the key attractions of the fair, showcasing a wide range of contemporary art, from conceptual works to expressive visual forms. The presented pieces emphasized current trends, including the exploration of personal and social narratives.

At their booth, I was particularly drawn to the artwork by Dirk Van Saene, one of the most iconic contemporary Belgian designers (from the “Antwerp Six”). His work presents an intriguing interpretation of the boundaries between form and content. The fashion designer, who only recently (5-6 years ago) turned to ceramics, creates anthropomorphic forms. Paraphrasing “it’s not the gods who make pottery,” his clay figures laugh and cry, love and mourn. The use of textile in the sculptures shows that the fashion designer has not disappeared – Dirk Van Saene remains a proud symbol of Antwerp fashion!
